ከግንቦት ሃያ ፍሬዎች?

There are tentative signs that the people of Ethiopia are beginning to organize themselves and stand up against the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) government, a brutal dictatorship, albeit one dressed in Western democratic garb.

After 23 years of suppression at the hands of the EPRDF, simmering discontent and anger appear to finally be spilling over onto the streets. Robbed of hope, the people have had enough, enough of the wide-ranging human rights abuses, the denial of constitutional rights, the arbitrary imprisonments and torture, the regime violence, the displacement of people from ancestral land, the partisan distribution of aid and the rising cost of living.

The government’s heavy-handed reaction to the Oromo protests is but the latest example of the regime’s ruthless response to criticism of its policies. Political opposition parties, when tolerated at all, have been totally marginalized, dissenting independent voices are quickly silenced and a general atmosphere of fear is all pervading. Despite freedom of expression being a constitutional right, virtually all media outlets are either government owned or controlled; “blogs and internet pages critical of the Ethiopian government are regularly blocked and independent radio stations, particularly those broadcasting in Amharic and Afan Oromo, are routinely jammed,”Human Rights Watch says.

The EPRDF has created “one of the most repressive media environments in the world”. Reinforcing this condition, “the government on 25 and 26 April arbitrarily arrested nine bloggers and journalists in Addis Ababa. They remain in detention without charge,” Human Rights Watch reports.

International human rights groups (whose activities have been severely restricted by the stifling Charities and Societies Proclamation of 2009) as well as foreign journalists are not welcome, and reporters who attempt to reach demonstrations are turned away or detained, making it difficult to confirm the exact numbers of those killed by government security personnel.

The UN Human Rights Council recently reviewed Ethiopia’s human rights record under the Universal Periodic Review.

Since the first review in 2009 the human rights situation has greatly deteriorated. The EPRDF rules the country through fear and intimidation, it has introduced ambiguous, universally condemned legislation to control and intimidate – the Charities and Societies Proclamation law and the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation especially.

Freedom of assembly – another constitutional right – is not allowed or, as can be seen with the Oromo protests, is dealt with in the harshest manner possible.

The Internet and telecommunications are controlled and monitored by the government and phone records and recordings are easily obtained by security personnel.

Arbitrary arrests and false Imprisonment of anyone criticizing the government is routine as is the use of torture on those incarcerated.

In the Ogaden region the regime is committing gross human rights abuses which constitute crimes against humanity, and in Gambella and the Lower Omo Valley large numbers of indigenous people have been forcibly moved into government camps (villagization programme), as land is sold for pennies to international companies.

In short, human rights are completely ignored by the government in Ethiopia.

As the people begin to come together and protest, international pressure should be applied on the regime to observe the rule of law and uphold the people’s fundamental human rights.

We are living in extraordinary times, times of opportunity and change, times of great hope. With elections due next year, now is the time for the various ethnic groups and factions inside and outside Ethiopia to unite, speak with one voice and demand their rights to freedom and justice.

ETHIOPIA :Dozens of Ethinic oromo students protesters killed!

At least a dozen protesters have been killed and many others wounded as students in Ethiopia's populous Oromia region clashed with military forces on Wednesday.
Student protests began earlier this month in response to plans by Addis Ababa City Administration which is expected to significantly expand the city's territorial jurisdiction.
Thousands of Oromo students at nine universities in Oromia have rallied in the last ten days opposing the plan, which they say would displace Oromo farmers and undermine their state's constitutionally protected "special interests." Oromo students at Jimma, Haromaya, Ambo, Wollega, Bule Hora, Madawalabu, Metu, Adama and Dire Dawa universities have turned out in droves denouncing the plan. At least 20 students were killed in Ambo while three others were shot dead at Madawalabu University on Wednesday, according to eyewitnesses. Unknown number of wounded protesters were being treated at local hospitals.
The Ethiopian capital falls within the Oromia state, the largest of Ethiopia's nine ethnic-based administrative regions, and also serves as its capital. The country's constitution stipulates the state's special interest in the city — providing for utilization of resources, service provision and joint administration matters. Protesters say the city's latest master plan undermines these interests.

Ethiopian Security Forces Open Fire on Students

There has been widespread protest by Oromo students in universities in Ethiopia against unpopular 'Addis Ababa-Finfinnee surrounding integrated master plan'. Oromo students in Haromaya, Jimma, Ambo and Wollega universities held protests.

Although officials in Oromia state and Addis Ababa city administration insist the plan only intends to develop Addis Ababa and its surrounding, Oromo students and the wider Oromo elites believe the plan is to displace farmers in the outskirts and suburban areas of the city, meet the growing demand for land, and weaken the Oromo identity. The Ethiopian constitution grants a special interest to the Oromia state regarding administrative, resource and other socio-economic matters in Addis Ababa, in its article 49 which never have been implemented. This has largely resulted in significant resistance within the ruling party, OPDO, in Oromia and a continues pressure to materialize the implementation.

The protest against the doomed to fail master plan is held in four universities sofar. Yesterday (26/04/2014) at Wollega University, the infamous and notorious Federal police opened fire at innocent Oromo students. Reports and eye witness indicate unknown number of students were hurt and some have fled to the bushes. The people of Nekemete town were prevented from joining the resistance. Even then some of the residents broke through line of federal police force and joined the protest.

At similar protest in Jimma university, the security forces picked more than 10 students and jailed them. Further 15 students in Ambo university were jailed.

The uproar against the plan is resonating across different segments of Oromo society. A singer by name Jafar Yusuf was jailed last week that is believed to be because he released a single condemning the plan. The diaspora is is voicing its concerns through the newly launched diaspora based Oromia Media Network

The security forces in Ethiopia are dominated by the Tigrayan minority who have been in power since the downfall of Derg communist regime in 1991. The Oromos are the most prosecuted in Ethiopia. More than 40000 Oromos are in jail, although the correct figure is hard to know.

The Oromo are Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group, 30 million, and their language is the fourth most spoken in Africa. Yet they are an invisible ethnicity in the eyes of the world

In August 2011, Bekele Gerba, an English teacher at Addis Ababa University and prominent politician, met with a delegation from Amnesty International to discuss the human rights situation in Ethiopia. Gerba, a vocal activist on behalf of his largely Muslim Oromo people, was deputy chairman of the opposition party Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM) and a member of the executive committee of Medrek, the country’s main opposition coalition.

To the Ethiopian government, however, Gerba was a terrorist. Four days after the meeting, he was arrested. In November 2012 Gerba was convicted and imprisoned under Ethiopia’s 2009Anti-Terrorism Proclamation for association with the banned Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), which the government has asserted is linked with al-Qaeda affiliated entities.
According to organisations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, however,Gerba was guilty of being Oromo and talking of the plight of his people. Shortly before hisarrest, Gerba had described the challenges facing his community, telling Voice of America “Anyone who speaks the [Oromo] language and does not belong to the ruling party is a suspect and can be taken to prison any time.” Gerba and other incarcerated Oromo (Oromo rights groups estimate there are around 20,000 Oromo political prisoners in Ethiopia) continue to spark protests in Ethiopia and across the global Oromo diaspora.
